White House Honors Teen Lifeguard and Boy He Saved in Viral Ocean Rescue
President Trump honored a 16-year-old lifeguard and the boy he saved from rough seas in Santa Cruz, calling both heroes.
President Donald Trump hosted a 16-year-old lifeguard and the 10-year-old boy he rescued at the White House on Monday, celebrating their bravery during a dramatic ocean rescue in Santa Cruz, California, last July.
Ryder Williams, a California State Parks lifeguard, and Nathaniel Rai were seated with the president in the Oval Office, where Trump praised their actions. "What you did was incredible, and everybody saw it," Trump said, referencing the viral video of the rescue. "When I first saw it, I said, 'roll that back, I want to see that again.'"
The footage, viewed millions of times online, shows Williams clutching Nathaniel as powerful waves repeatedly crashed over them. At one point, both disappear underwater for several seconds before emerging, with Williams continuing to pull the boy toward shore. Fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen, who assisted in the rescue, also attended the meeting along with both families.
Trump called Williams a "real hero" and told Nathaniel that "God was watching you." He also remarked on the boy's calm demeanor under pressure, saying, "The way Nathaniel handled it was — he was cool, considering the problems."
Williams credited his training for his quick response. "In those dangerous moments that we have, we always try to fall back on our training," he said. "I really was thinking about how to get the boy out of the water as fast as I can." He added that he hopes to become a paramedic and eventually a firefighter.
Trump invited the group to see the Lincoln Bedroom and suggested Williams might receive "some good recommendations" for his career aspirations. The president had previously shared the rescue video on his Truth Social platform in July, writing that the boys deserved a high civilian honor.
During the rescue, Williams described seeing Nathaniel lose his footing in shallow water at Seabright Beach. The rough conditions made it difficult to secure a rescue tube around the boy, who lost consciousness before being brought ashore with Bohnen's help.
Trump marveled at the footage, saying, "It's so amazing to see this happen, to see it before your eyes. I've seen rescues before. I've never seen anything quite like this."
