WHO: Congo Ebola Outbreak Still Controllable in Three Months

The WHO believes the Ebola outbreak in Congo can still be contained within three months, provided necessary resources are secured.

The World Health Organization (WHO) maintains that the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo can still be brought under control within the next three months, even as the virus continues to spread to new areas.

Speaking to reporters via video link from Bunia, Dr. Thierno Balde, the WHO's incident manager, expressed cautious optimism. "About the next plan for the three months, yes, if you have the necessary resources, I think it will be possible to do that," he said on Tuesday.

The statement comes after the global health agency earlier this month projected that reversing the spread of Ebola would be achievable within a three-month window. However, since that assessment, the situation has shown signs of deterioration, with the outbreak now reaching a sixth province.

Despite the widening geographic footprint, WHO officials believe that a focused response, backed by sufficient funding and personnel, can still alter the trajectory of the epidemic. The emphasis remains on mobilizing the required resources to match the pace of the outbreak.
