A wild gaur crossing the road hit a scooter at Manjakal near Bovikanam in Kasaragod, seriously injuring two people in the early hours of Monday.
A wild gaur struck a scooter in Kasaragod district early on Monday, leaving two people with serious injuries, police-linked accounts of the incident indicate.
The collision occurred at Manjakal, near Bovikanam, when the animal was crossing the road. The impact threw both riders onto the road.
The injured have been identified as C.M. Jithina, 22, a BSc Nursing student from Thankethadukka at Karivedagam, and P. Amalraj, 24, of Alathumkadavu, who was riding the scooter.
Jithina sustained chest injuries and was first taken to a hospital in Kasaragod. She was later moved to a facility in Mangaluru as her condition was serious. Amalraj, who was also badly hurt, is being treated at a private hospital in Cherkala.
Residents of the Manjakkal area said wild gaurs have been seen frequently over the past two years, although there had been no earlier reports of the animals attacking people.
They have called for immediate steps, including the erection of safety fencing, to check the movement of wild gaurs in the locality.
