Wildfire Erupts on Mount Kilimanjaro, Emergency Teams Deployed

A wildfire has broken out on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, raising concerns for the mountain's fragile ecosystem. The fire was first reported on Thursday, September 3, within the Kilimanjaro National Park area in northern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border.

Tanzania's Tourism Minister, Ashatu Kijaji, said the fire started higher up the mountain. She noted that it may have been caused by people guiding tourists or by other factors, adding that the dry season and dry vegetation make the area susceptible to fires. "For now, we are focusing all our efforts on putting out the fire in order to save our mountain," she said.

Helicopters and ground teams from the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), the Tanzania Forest Services Agency, and other emergency responders have been deployed to contain the blaze. Footage from the scene shows firefighters battling the flames on the mountain's slopes.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and authorities have not yet reported any injuries or damage to infrastructure. The priority remains to extinguish the fire and protect the mountain's unique biodiversity.
