Winter Waste Burning Drives Urban Pollution to Three Times Summer Levels

A WRI India study finds winter waste burning in cities causes pollution three times higher than in summer, due to atmospheric conditions and seasonal practices.

A new study by the World Resources Institute (WRI) India has found that pollution from the burning of waste in urban areas during winter is three times higher than in summer. The research highlights how seasonal factors combine with human behaviour to create a severe air-quality challenge in Indian cities.

The study points to meteorological conditions unique to winter as a key driver. Weaker winds, more stable atmospheric layers, and frequent temperature inversions trap pollutants close to the ground, preventing their dispersion. This natural phenomenon amplifies the impact of any emissions released within city limits.

Beyond the weather, the study also attributes the spike to an increase in waste-burning activity itself. In colder months, residents often burn waste as a source of warmth, a practice that adds to the seasonal load. Additionally, winter-specific waste disposal routines contribute to the higher volume of burning.

The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions that address both the behavioural and atmospheric factors behind winter pollution, rather than relying solely on summer-time regulations.
