Former wrestler, two children die in fort fall; dowry case filed

A former national-level wrestler and two of her children died after falling from a deep gorge at Naldurg fort in Maharashtra's Dharashiv district, police said. The third child is seriously injured.
Ashwini Pol, 30, had visited the fort on Thursday with her six-year-old son Ajinkya and two-and-a-half-year-old twin daughters, Kranti and Veera. The four fell from the Upli bastion, a drop of about 100 feet. Ashwini and her son died at the spot. Kranti succumbed to injuries at a hospital, while Veera is on ventilator support.
Following a complaint from Ashwini's father, Tanaji Shivaji Mohite, a teacher from Whantal in Umarga, police registered a case against her husband and in-laws. The charges include dowry death, abetment of suicide, and cruelty by husband or relatives under the Bharatiya Nyay Sahita.
Investigating officer Ravindra Gaikwad said the prima facie probe indicates Ashwini was harassed over dowry and mentally tortured for giving birth to twin daughters. Ashwini, who had been living at her maternal home, had won five gold and six silver medals in state and national wrestling competitions.
