Xi and Peng Liyuan Tour Grand Egyptian Museum with Egyptian President

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, joined Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and his wife, Entissar El-Sisi, for a guided tour of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza on Wednesday. The visit came during Xi's two-day state visit to Egypt.

The two leaders and their spouses admired the museum's collection of stone carvings and inscribed pillars before taking in views of the nearby pyramids from the observation deck. Inside the Tutankhamun exhibition hall, they examined prized artefacts including the pharaoh's throne, the golden mask, and royal chariots.

During the tour, Xi noted that China and Egypt are both ancient civilisations with rich World Heritage sites. He said the two civilisations have reached out to each other across time and space, adding new chapters to the peoples' lasting friendship. He called on both sides to uphold a vision of civilisation based on equality, mutual learning, dialogue, and inclusiveness, and to implement the Global Civilisation Initiative. Xi also urged the two countries to promote the inclusive coexistence of different civilisations and to pool strength from civilisations to advance a community with a shared future for humanity.

President El-Sisi thanked Xi for his congratulations on the museum's opening last year. He said ancient Egyptian and Chinese civilisations share qualities of openness, inclusiveness, and harmonious coexistence amid diversity, which closely aligns with the Global Civilisation Initiative. El-Sisi added that Egypt is ready to work with China to step up people-to-people and cultural exchanges, promote mutual learning among civilisations, and make the world more harmonious and inclusive.
