Xi Tells Trump State Dinner MAGA and China's Rejuvenation Can Reinforce Each Other

Chinese President Xi Jinping told a White House state dinner that his country's goal of national rejuvenation and U.S. President Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" agenda are both ambitious and can reinforce one another.

Speaking in the East Room during a state dinner hosted by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, Xi said the two countries should act with the sense of responsibility expected of major powers and explore a new approach to getting along.

Xi thanked the president and first lady for what he described as warm hospitality and thoughtful arrangements, saying the attention to detail had made his delegation feel at home. He also noted that Chinese people were marking the Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional occasion for family reunions, and extended greetings to those in the United States who support the development of bilateral ties.

Reflecting on the pace of diplomacy, Xi recalled that Trump had visited China in May at his invitation, when the two sides agreed to build what he called a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability. He said Trump had then invited him to the United States, and that he had now come as promised.

Xi noted that the two heads of state had exchanged visits in less than half a year, describing it as a first in the history of bilateral engagement. He said their talks that day had been sincere and in-depth, producing new common understandings that enriched the relationship and offered fresh strategic guidance for its direction.

He framed the current moment as a new historical starting point for China-U.S. relations, saying both countries' development goals are ambitious and compatible. The state dinner followed a day of meetings between the two leaders in Washington.
