Airstrikes in Yemen's Mokha Kill Six, Including Children, Houthi Media Says

Airstrikes struck the Yemeni port city of Mokha on Tuesday, killing at least six people, among them two children and a woman, according to Houthi-run media. The city was captured earlier this month by the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, whose health ministry reported the casualties.

The strikes occurred hours after the internationally recognized Yemeni government accused the Houthis of attacking an open public market in Lahj province, close to the center of fighting on the country's western coast.

One of those injured in the Mokha strikes, Ibrahim Mohammed Al-Hassani, described the moment of impact. "The aircraft struck the house while we were in, the aircraft were striking us while we were inside," he said. Asked how many people had been in the house, he replied that he had been at home with his family.

Footage from the scene showed an injured child being held by his father as a medical worker examined him, a man weeping, and people gathered in a hospital corridor. A relative of a man killed in the strikes was heard describing him as someone who helped everyone who came to him.

The violence unfolded as Middle East conflicts cast a shadow over the opening of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. On the sidelines of the gathering, the foreign ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States called on Iran to stop supporting the Houthis, describing their actions as "a dangerous pattern of escalation that risks further exacerbating the conflict, undermining international trade and creating global economic instability."

Fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces has reignited Yemen's civil war and led to attacks on Saudi Arabia.
