Zelenskyy Backs New Defense Minister, Sets Priorities for Ukraine's Military
Ukraine's parliament approves Maj. Gen. Yevhenii Khmara as defense minister; Zelenskyy outlines priorities including deep strikes and air defense.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed his support for the newly appointed Defense Minister, Maj. Gen. Yevhenii Khmara, following a parliamentary vote on Wednesday. In his nightly address, Zelenskyy thanked lawmakers for their strong backing of Khmara's appointment, as well as for approving Andrii Sybiha as the new Foreign Minister.
Zelenskyy praised Khmara's background with the Alpha Special Operations Center, stating that his service demonstrates a commitment to action over empty promises. The President emphasized that occupiers are not defeated with words, and he outlined clear expectations for the Defense Ministry under Khmara's leadership.
These expectations include expanding the operational scope of Ukraine's deep-strike capabilities, collaborating with domestic weapons manufacturers to strengthen air defense, and working with international partners to enhance both defensive and offensive operations.
The appointment comes amid a broader reshuffle of Ukraine's wartime leadership. The changes follow the recent dismissal of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, a long-time ally of Zelenskyy, and Commander-in-Chief Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi. The reshuffle appears aimed at addressing tensions between the ministry's tech-focused innovators and the military's more traditional, Soviet-trained leadership.
Zelenskyy also addressed the country's diplomatic priorities, noting that communication with partners must provide Ukraine with greater strength, particularly as Europe may face political turbulence with the start of a new political season.
