Assam Marks Zubeen Garg's First Death Anniversary with Tributes and Blood Camps

Assam observed the first death anniversary of singer Zubeen Garg on Saturday with a series of tributes across the state, including blood donation camps organised by the state BJP and a three-day cultural programme put together by the government.

The party had announced blood donation drives in its organisational districts as a mark of respect for the late singer. Health Minister Ashok Singhal described the initiative as a fitting tribute and a true 'shraddhanjali' to Garg. Minister Rameswar Teli also said the programme was a way of honouring his memory.

In Sonapur, on the outskirts of Guwahati, hundreds of fans joined members of the All Assam Students' Union, family members and artistes at Zubeen Khetra. Those gathered sang some of his popular songs and paid their respects.

Speaking at the venue, AASU Chief Advisor Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya recalled Garg's death and renewed the demand for justice. He said a year had passed since the unexpected incident and that Garg must get justice.

The state's Cultural Affairs Department organised a three-day programme in the singer's memory, which began on September 17 and concluded on Saturday.

Garg died in Singapore on September 19, 2025, a day before he was due to perform at the Northeast India Festival. Over his career he worked as a singer, composer, musician, actor and filmmaker, recording songs in several languages. He became widely known beyond Assam with 'Ya Ali' from the 2006 Hindi film 'Gangster', while remaining closely tied to Assamese music and culture.
