Singer Papon joined family, fans and leaders in honouring Zubeen Garg on his first death anniversary, as events were held in Guwahati, Delhi and beyond.
Assam observed the first death anniversary of Zubeen Garg on Saturday, with tributes flowing in from family, fans, political leaders and fellow artists for the singer, composer, musician, actor and filmmaker who died in Singapore on September 19, 2025.
Singer Papon, a close friend of Garg, attended a ceremony and paid his homage, meeting the late artist's wife, Garima Saikia Garg. In a social media post, he wrote, "Shine On, You Crazy Diamond - No words can describe the loss... Miss you my brother..." Papon has frequently remembered Garg since his passing, including sharing an old photograph with the caption, "Missing you so much, my brother. Stay happy wherever you are."
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal paid his respects at a ceremony in Guwahati. The All Assam Students' Union also organised a tribute programme in the city, recalling Garg's contribution to Assamese culture.
In the national capital, a floral tribute ceremony was held at the Assam House premises, where Resident Commissioner Kavitha Padmanabhan, along with officials and employees, placed flowers at a portrait of the late artist.
The Assam government's Cultural Affairs Department organised a three-day programme in his memory, which began on September 17 and concluded on Saturday.
Garg was scheduled to perform at the Northeast India Festival a day after his death. He gained wider recognition beyond Assam with "Ya Ali" from the 2006 Hindi film 'Gangster', while remaining closely tied to Assamese music and culture throughout his career, recording songs in several languages.
